The Authority & Value of Scripture

The Authority & Value of Scripture

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8

Key Principles

  1. The Bible and the Bible alone is our authority.
  • It is God’s Word. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
    • It’s not human words, it’s God’s word delivered through men.
  • It is eternal. (Isaiah 40:8)
    • Just like investing your money, you want to make sure you invest your life in something that will last. God’s Word lasts forever!
  • It does not change. (Matthew 5:18)
    • Change is constant, but Bible can be relied on!
  • It is Truth. (John 17:17)
  • It is sufficient for all of life. (Psalm 19:7-9)

In order to be motivated to use the Bible, we must be absolutely convinced of its authority & value.

  1. We must hunger for, feed on, and chew up the Word of God constantly.
    • Deuteronomy 8:3
    • Jeremiah 15:16

Imagine if you were to eat a huge feast on Monday. Imagine you ate until you couldn’t fit another bite in. Then, you waited until the next Monday before eating another thing. You would be malnourished and in terrible shape. That’s exactly what we do so often with God’s Word when we come to church and hear a sermon and never crack the Bible open again until the next Sunday!

It should be a daily feast! There will be times when you are not hungry, but don’t stop eating!

  1. The aim of studying God’s word is not only to increase knowledge, but to do what it says.
  • James 1:22-25
  • Matthew 7:24-27

Knowledge alone is useless. We must put our knowledge into action!

  1. There are limitless benefits of studying and obeying God’s Word.
    • Salvation (Romans 1:16)
    • Hope (Romans 15:4)
    • Purity (Psalm 119:9-11)
    • Inspiration (Psalm 73:16-28)
    • Right Relationships (Matthew 22:37-39)
    • Useful for growth. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
    • Produces fruit in our lives (Psalm 1:1-3)
    • Conviction (Hebrews 4:12)
    • Reveals God’s Will (Psalm 119:105)
    • It is the greatest way to Know God
  1. It is necessary to study God’s word. It’s not an option.
    • Joshua 1:8
  2. You must take personal responsibility to feed on and obey the Word of God for yourself.
